OVERVIEW

Cary Dog Park Club is made up of local residents dedicated to establishing the first legal dog park in Cary. Most members are residents of Cary; however, we welcome residents from neighboring towns who could benefit from having a dog park in Cary.

Cary Dog Park Club has been actively working for the cause since is was officially formed in July 2002.

MISSION

Our mission is to establish the first, legal and safe dog park in Cary, to which owners can take their dogs to exercise and play.

FOUNDERS

Cary Dog Park Club was founded in July 2002 by Jeff Boucher, Cara Lewis and Andy Steude. Starting with only 3 people, the club now has well over 400 members!

LEADERSHIP

Our club is managed by a dedicated steering committee that meets every two weeks to discuss and review progress, plan local events and review ongoing goals and responsibilities.

STEERING COMMITTEE

PIONEERS

Many fine people have contributed their money, sweat and tears to our club’s cause.

Two major contributors were Cara Lewis, one of the co-founders and prime movers in the club's first years of operation, and Deb Thompson who acted on the steering committe in the role of canine behavior consultant.

We would like to also acknowledge the important contributions of some of our early pioneers: Nick and Julie Carlino, Beckie Dunn, Pat Easterbrook, Emmett Ernenwein, Allison Florance and Jean Prince. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the efforts of these fine folks.

VOLUNTEERS

Like any grass roots organization, we always need volunteers. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out!

FOUNDERS AND STEERING COMMITTEE PROFILES

JEFF and “Peanut & Ally”
Jeff is a co-founder of Cary Dog Park Club and currently serves as President. He is eager to get a dog park for Ally, a very lively lab, and Peanut, a beagle that can hold his own with the big dawgs. Inspired by Sanford Paw Park in Florida, Jeff has visited several dog parks throughout the Southeast and is committed to creating the first legal dog park in Cary. Originally from Boston, Jeff moved “South” a few years ago and is now proud to call Cary home. He is a Senior Loan Officer with Affiliated Mortgage/York Simpson Underwood. Jeff is also involved in the Town of Cary’s Greenway Committee, Cary’s Preston Kiwanis Club and the Town of Cary’s School of Government. He and his wife Jenny enjoy tennis, mountain biking and traveling.

CARA and “Raven”
Cara is a co-founder of Cary Dog Park Club and until March 2004, served as Communications Director. She is also the proud owner of “Raven,” an exuberant AmStaf mix adopted from the SPCA in Garner. When not enjoying the lively playgroups generously offered by CDPC hosts, Raven serves as a loyal administrative assistant in Cara's home office. His duties include: announcing the arrival of UPS, sleeping in the sun and barking during conference calls. During her residency in North Carolina, Cara was a communications consultant based in Cary. Cara was an active member in the Council for Entrepreneurial Development and the National Investor Relations Institute, as well as a graduate of Cary’s Citizen Police Academy and a patron of The Cary Players. In 2004, Cara and husband Andy decided to follow Andy's career to Seattle were dog parks are plenty.

ANDY and “Bailey & Fancy”
Andy is a co-founder of Cary Dog Park Club and currently serves as Chief Technology Officer. Andy was the pioneering force behind the club’s web site and was the first to host a “dog play group.” The driving force behind his involvement in the club were Bailey, a purebred mutt and gentle chicken, and Fancy, a white German Shepherd who succumbed to cancer in August, 2003. Bailey shares a home with four cats and, since 2/2002, a new alpha, Emma. Andy and his wife Kelly moved to Cary in 2001 and love it here. A software engineer by trade, Andy also enjoys woodworking, construction and the occasional heated philosophical discussion.

SUZANNE & JAMIE and “Keeper & Raven”
One of two ‘power couples’ within the club, Suzanne is our Events Manager and Jamie is our Liaison with the Cary Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Advisory Board. They own Keeper, a black lab mix, adopted from NC Lab Rescue, and Raven, a young black lab full of puppy energy. Keeper loves to play soccer with his basketball and Raven loves to play tug-of-war with any person or dog. Raven also enjoys eating non-food items like bark, sticks, pinecones, books, shoes, toilet paper, and Suzanne’s glasses. When not protecting household items from Raven’s cravings, Suzanne works as a Reference Librarian at Shaw University in Raleigh and Jamie is a Team Lead at the Hill-Rom Watch Child Technical Support group in Cary. Suzanne enjoys scrap booking and craft. And Jamie loves to play computer games, Dungeons and Dragons, and ride bikes. Together they enjoy movies, TV, working in their garden, and an occasional tennis game. Originally from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Suzanne moved to New York City in 1997 to work at the New York Public Library. Jamie grew up in Durham NC and moved to New York City after graduating from University of Pennsylvania in 1992. Suzanne and Jamie met in New York but soon decided that they would be happier closer to family, so they moved to Cary in August 1999. Jamie continues his quest to make an American out of Suzanne!

KIM and “Chinook”
Kim is our Marketing Manager and guardian of “Chinook,” an energetic and playful German Shepherd Dog. Kim moved to Cary from Boulder, Colorado where dog parks are far from unusual and actively supported by local citizens and organizations. Growing up in Boulder, Chinook was able to run freely in dog parks, hike mountains without a lead, and swim with the ducks in local lakes. Kim is dedicated to working with Cary Dog Park Club to ensure that Chinook, and all local dogs, will have a place of their own here in Cary one day soon.

LAURA & GLENN and “Barney”
Another ‘power couple,’ within our organization, Laura is our organized Operations Manager and Glenn is our dedicated webmaster and both have been members of the steering committee since August 2002. Laura and Glenn are the proud owners of Barney, a ‘senior dog,’ rescued from a neglectful home when he was 12 years old. Along with Glenn and Laura and their two boys, Barney shares his home with three cats, one snake and one frog. Laura is a relative newcomer to North Carolina, having moved here in 1998 from Arizona. Glenn is originally from Ohio, but has called North Carolina home for 19 years. Glenn and Laura have lived in Cary since the summer of 2000. Professionally, Glenn is employed with Nortel Networks and Laura works for the Town of Cary. Laura and Glenn spend their time aiding the efforts of the Cary Dog Park Club and volunteering at the SPCA. Glenn and Laura also enjoy going to movies, especially at Madstone, concerts, and enjoying as many area day trips and regional adventures as time permits.

CHRIS and "Honey"
Chris is a steering committee member, and the Playgroups Manager. Chris and her partner, Ken, moved to Cary in the mid 90's from the Washington D.C. area. Though their friends bet that Chris would have a dog within a few months of buying a house, she was content with loving the neighbor's pets for a few years. Then Chris and Ken adopted "Honey", a 2 year old female retriever mix. Though Honey has mellowed considerably over the years, she still loves to play hard with other dogs. Even before discovering the Cary Dog Park Club, Honey enjoyed regular playdates with canine companions of neighbors and friends. Chris is an expert online shopper; likes to research any topic online; enjoys photography; loves to travel; and for Ken's sake, has college football fever.
